Fxguy
I've got some salad bowl finish that I plan on using for a project and the instructions say to finish sand with 220 Grit paper. I'm wondering how important this is? Would it be ok to finish with 180 grit instead?

wtnhighlander
I find that the softer the wood, the finer it should be sanded to get a good finish. White pine, for example, needs at least 320 or higher to get even coloring with stain. Red oak, on the other hand, does pretty well even at 150. Rick Mosher
I find it best to experiment on scrap pieces and decide what works best for you.
Marco Divetta
+1 on the sample piece first ....... I think Some finishes require a smooth surface to achieve a nice shine, if the surface of the wood is to rough you won't get a nice luster but I don't think there will be a major difference between 180 and 220 grit
