alindsey
I work at Woodcraft here in Cincinnati. In the past few weeks since Woodworking in America I've been seeing a ton of customers coming in with questions/purchases of hand-planes, tools, benches and bench hardware... does my heart good and keeps me very busy as I'm one of the few guys in the store who knows anything about them. Sunday I taught a "Woodworking 101" class in the store. We needed to cut tapered legs for a Shaker style end table and, never having met a table saw tapering jig (at least not a commercial one) that I felt safe using, I had them all lay out the tapers and cut them on the bandsaw then plane them square and smooth by hand. Seven people using hand planes that are well-tuned and well set up. Warmed the very cockles of my blood-pump, it did!
Ben H
Thats great man. It's good that a conference such as WIA was able to stimulate local business and not just online orders of companies.
Kari Hultman
Sometimes, tasks like that one can go more quickly with just a band saw and plane rather than taking the time to set up and do test cuts on a table saw. If you're doing a large production run, though, the TS is more efficient. But it ain't as much fun, in my opinion.
