Popular Post SirNot
So when I started getting into woodworking about a year ago, I really started to fall in love with hand planes. I'm on a budget, so shelling out the money for a bunch of LN planes was out of the question. Heck even finding used ones on ebay was pricier than I could really afford for tools that I knew wouldn't see everyday use. I kept hearing stories about finding old Stanley Baileys at garage sales and flea markets for under $50 bucks, but I wan't finding them. The best I was able to get was a Handyman #4 on ebay. I got it to work decently enough, but really wanted to find a good quality plane. Well, my patience has finally paid off, and now, I just can't stop. First I find a SB 7, SB 5 1/2, Stanley Defiance 5 1/2, a Buckeye 5 1/2 and SB 4 along with an unknown compass plane for $50... And now I've picked up these for $75... I was only looking for a router plane, but how can I pass on this? The only thing left for me to find is a spokeshave, but I just don't know if I am strong enough to turn down any deals like these should I come across them in the future. I mean I don't really need another SB 5, but look how pretty that one is... Thankfully, I have an understanding wife.
TerryMcK
You have the illness called woodworking tool collecting. We all have it to one degree or other. The Stanleys will be great for years to come. A great haul you have.
Dylder
I try to stick to the Sweathearts. It keeps me from buying every plane at every flea market or antique store. Good luck with your addiction
SirNot
I think I may be done. I won't know until I clean them all up and try them out. Other than a spokeshave, I think I really need anything else. I now have a Stanly Baily #4, #5, #5.5 and #7 plus the Defiance and Buckeye #5.5s, a Stanley sweetheart block plane, an Stanley Handyman #4, an unknown #5.5 The pictured Millers Falls rabbete plane, the Stanley router plane and the cabinet scraper. RichardA
You will find that you are addicted, like it or not. You'll spend time cleaning them, sharpening them, and giving some wood the haircut they need. And when you accidentlly run across another plane, you'll buy, then there will be another, and you'll buy, then you'll get them working and start putting the ones you have double and triple of on ebay, because there's a plane on ebay that you don't have, and you'll just keep on. Been there, done that.
