Popular Post rodger.
In another thread, I was looking for a solution to test my drill press for square and runout. I normally use a drill bit for this, but I was concerned it was not accurate enough. I called a machine shop and bought a 6" drill bit blank, which is very accurate. Its 1/2" in diameter. I chucked the blank into the drill press, and checked for runout. I did this by clamping a dial indicator (0.001") onto the drill press table. I turned the chuck by hand, and got about 3 thou of runout. This is acceptable in a drill press of this quality level. Then I squared the table by attaching a digital angle gauge to the blank, and then adjusting the table to 90 degrees (directly under the bit). then I confirmed the squareness by placing an engineers square on the table. Looks like the indicator on the press is not very accurate. To be fair, this is an aftermarket chuck. Well, I am all tuned up and ready to drill some more holes now. I did remove the chuck during this session with a bearing remover, and cleaned it. I pressed it back on by with a block of wood and the drill press table.
Bankstick
You can also check for level of the table by taking a piece of coat hanger, bending it at about a 45 degree angle and then bending the end down to the table. Turn the chuck by hand and the end of the wire will show any high or low spots. I found my DP table is off a bit front to back. Need to have the base machined down or shim it to be level.
