stumpworks
Recently sprayed catalyzed varnish over rustic slab dining tops and tops are developing wrinkles over the epoxy filled grain cracks and knot holes. The rest of top is fine. Has anyone seen this?
wtnhighlander
Never saw that before, I'm guessing the catylist is reacting with the epoxy. Epoxy is usually pretty inert after it cures, but maybe not to everything.
drzaius
It may be a reaction or just a bonding issue. How fine did you go with your sanding? There needs to be enough 'tooth' for the varnish to bond.
stumpworks
I read quite a bit more last night and I think I sprayed too thick without enough dry time between coats. I sprayed in am and then in pm at 65 plus temperature sanding 320 inbetween, but if I was too thick, because the areas where there was epoxy fill are, are non-absorbunt. Those areas the top of the coat dried off before the bottom and then got coated again 8 hrs later, before completely curing. The reason it didn't show up in the rest of top is that the finish was not too thick for the wood and it was able to adhere to the grain rather than the epoxy. That's my new theory anyway. I'm using Woodright product. I watched finishers spray am / pm schedules on surfaces, but they were not dealing with epoxies areas. And after reading the comment in thread and thinking about it, I'm going to drop down to 180 or 220 between coats, instead of 320 sanding.
