Popular Post gee-dub Posted October 29, 2022 Popular Post Report Posted October 29, 2022 So I have this bandsaw template jig which is my take on one shown in Woodsmith, Shopnotes, or some other magazine that I do not recall. I primarily use it to make odd shapes on the bandsaw more quickly and reliably consistent when several duplicate parts are required. I should mention that in the picture above the lower wooden guide (engaged with the blade) is for tight turns. The one not in use but just parked above on the posts is for more gentle curves. You only use one or the other. I had a fair amount of template routing to do. I used the bandsaw template jig as opposed to "cutting near the line" prior to template routing. You can see the difference in spoil by cutting close versus using the jig in the pic below. That is just extra material I would have to plow through at the router table. The small amount of material left proud of the template made the work at the router table quicker, cleaner, and easier. It is not really much extra work since I would normally trace around the template on the blank, cut close to the line at the bandsaw, attach the template, and then template route at the table. Given the reduced amount of material removed at the router table it may actually be faster overall when doing a lot of this sort of work. I use a top / bottom bearing bit and always try to route downhill. For smaller pieces I use a carrier of some sort. A hand screw serves in this case. This overall process is not something I would do for just a few items but, when doing 20 or more items that are mostly different . . . I think it paid off. 8 Quote
