Popular Post Tom King
Certainly nothing to come close to Coop's tree damage, but this happened last week when a strong front went through. We don't get any shade from it on the house, with it being in the Northeast of the yard, but the horses enjoy it on hot afternoons. I'm sure it will fill back out in a few years. I'm not going to worry about even cutting it up until the weather gets cooler this Fall. It didn't harm the fence at all, but straddled it so I'll have to be a little careful how I drop parts of it. It's bigger than it looks in the picture. It's so dry here now that those leaves have dried that much since the end of last week. You can see the broken stub up in the opening. That tree has lost limbs in three hurricanes over the years. Hopefully it will have a chance to fill back out.
curlyoak
Looks like the tree has some age. It seems tenacious. Been through a lot and still there. What kind of tree is it?
Popular Post Tom King
It's a White Oak, about 2' diameter, maybe a little larger. No other tree anywhere near it. I made that pasture in 1994. Before then it was all woods. We saved three of those White Oaks near the house, but the other two got blown down by Hurricane Isabel. The pasture was created in 1994 because Hurricane Fran destroyed our woods, and we either had to clearcut 150 acres, or lose it all to Pine Beetles because it was laying all over each other. Before that, we just had a small pasture. Where we let trees grow back is recovering nicely, and we have trails all through it. It's been thinned once since then. That pasture in the picture is on top of a hill that's the highest spot around for a long ways. All the Pine trees that were in that pasture were laying on the ground. Strong winds get accelerated up the hill, and have long fetches across big water in three directions before the wind gets here . That tree withstood Hurricanes Fran, Floyd, and Isabel.
curlyoak
I like that tree. Tom, have you ever built a tree house?
Tom King
We had one for our children when they were young. It was in one of those Oak trees that Fran took down. I never had one when I was young.
