TV Stand

We need a new TV Stand, for a HD TV we're getting for our Living Room. Part of me just wanted to go out and buy a stand, so we can get the TV quicker :). After looking at what was out there, I just couldn't buy that junk.

My plan will be for all solid wood. The wood will most likely be Cherry, but I'm still decided on that. I added a subtle curve to the bottom rails. Maybe too subtle on the front rail. I mirrored the curve on the bottom rail, on the top rails of the doors. The doors look a little plain right now, because I haven't decided on the handles yet. There will be a couple shelves, I just haven't added them to the drawing yet. The open area at the top, is for components that need IR remote control.

I like the design. I'd use cherry plywood for the panels, to save money and avoid having to glue up wide panels.

Thanks Beech. I did think about using plywood for the panels. I've never had much luck matching plywood, to solid wood. You can just tell they are different, even if you get the color to match. I may use plywood for the back panels, that really aren't seen.

Wow, I like you nice clean design. You could jazz it up with some walnut or some other wood accents, but I'm betting you thought of that. I'm making a desk (after I finish my not yet started tool cabinet) that use the same frame and panel approach for the drawer cabinet so I'm hopin' you post a lot of pictures so I can steal ideas.

The design I'm planning to start with has some dovetail details in it. The top rails on the case have sliding dovetail joints that show on the front of the case. Since its a rail, the joint isn't that long. Maybe there's ideas around that.

Or maybe you just need some quilted maple panels. :)

My first thought was Cherry. My wife would like to have some lighter colored wood in the living room. It could end up being Maple, we are still talking about that. It could end up being a mix. I would think about something figured, but I don't want it to be too busy. The joinery on this cabinet will be mortise and tenon. I'm also a big fan fan of drawboring and pinning the joints.

I don't know your measurements but it looks way to tall for the intended application.

This varies from person to person, but most prefer to have the middle of the TV screen at the same height as the eyes. If adjusting in any direction most prefer to lower the TV a bit. Same goes for computers, you generally want to have the eyes at about 2/3ds of the monitor height (so you look down a bit to see the center line).

Looking up is hard work in the end, like getting the front seats at the cinema.

Thanks Tobbe. Height was a concern for me and I gave it some thought. This stand is a few inches shorter than what we have now. It's a little taller than some on the market, but also the same height as some. There are also some really tall TV stands out there too, but I didn't want one of those. I agree, looking up is no fun. The height of our current TV stand is working for us. So going a few inches shorter, I think should work too.
