walnut_weasel
I am having problems tuning up my jointer and I need some suggestions. I have no problems making the face of the board flat. But when placing the face up against the fence to joint one edge the board becomes tapered along the width. Any ideas? I am guessing maybe my cutter is too high above the outfeed?

walnut_weasel
Thanks Eric. Unfortunately I don't have the $150-200 to spend on a straight edge and dial indicator right now. I was hoping someone had a suggestion or two.
rmac
But when placing the face up against the fence to joint one edge the board becomes tapered along the width. I had that same problem with my jointer when I first got it. The problem went away the first time I changed knives, and I had the same guess as you--that the outfeed table was too low before I changed the knives. I never was 100% sure, though. -- Russ PS: You can get a perfectly serviceable dial indicator for way less than $20. Or go all out and get this for about $25. walnut_weasel
Thanks Russ. I will have to pick one up! Too bad long (accurate) straight edges are not also so inexpensive.
PeteJr
I have found better results when I maintain a moderate downward force on the outfeed table as the board moves over the cutter head.
