croessler
I am building a desk top from a large Padauk slab. So, the question in my mind is that should I fill the pores? This is a fairly open grained wood; Just asking opinions As I have only turned this wood or used small pieces in cutting boards not furniture. thewoodwhisperer
I suppose if you are looking to write directly on the desk or if you want a high gloss finish, you might want to fill the pores. Otherwise, I'd say leave it unfilled. Keep in mind Padauk can also cause finishing problems due to its natural oil content. So you have to take precautions if you plan on using an oil-based finish. sbarton22
What are some of the potential problems?
thewoodwhisperer
Not drying. You'll want to seal it first using dewaxed shellac. Then apply your varnish.
croessler
Any writing that may take place on this desk will probably not be directly on the surface; also, I am not planning on using a a high gloss top coat. So, a follow on question: Would the the Shellac be just a 1lb cut then?
thewoodwhisperer
Yeah that would work quite well.
