Screamer777
The other day I looked at a log. What strike me the most is the sudden colour variation between the sapwood and hardwood? There are many different species of woods available to us, each with a unique set of colour and texture in the hardwood. My question is what causes that sudden colour variation in between hard and sapwood that made wood so beautiful.
dwacker
Its heartwood not hardwood. Sapwood is living portion of the tree heart wood is dead and is the remains of the sapling. Don
Screamer777
Hi Don. Thanks for the info . Heartwood and not hardwood. It was a typo by me. I know the sapwood is the portion of the tree where the water and other chemicals are transported to the leaves. My question is what cause the heartwood to differ from the sapwood in colour. Walnut, red oak, bubinga, elm, even pine do have that colour change in the center. Johan
paoloberno
The heartwood is the backbone of the tree it doesn't carry water or nutrients because his task is to sustain the tree, the change in thoughness and color happens because the tree accumulates salts, minerals and preservative chemicals in it
