Kevmc
Wondering what everyone is using for the wagon vice guide. I am making the bench out of soft maple. I have a piece of ipe that's definitely hard and straight grained. I am not sure I like the look as its the only dark wood in the bench that has some paduak accents buts it's the only other wood I have besides a crap load of soft maple cut offs
Vic
I went with a very hard wood, Orange Osage. From talking with folks, it seemed prudent.
allencrane
I'm going with mesquite (janka is something like 3X the soft maple benchtop) for the end cap and the wagon vise guide block.
AMarshall
I'm confused on terminology. Which part are you guys calling the wagon vise guide? Ipe is very nice, but is soft maple really not strong enough? It's always seemed pretty sturdy to me.
Vic
Aaron, I'm guessing the piece that runs thru the motise 90* off the chop. My Fir was tearing out, but yes soft Maple would work well, I would think.
konkers
Kev, Are you talking about the wagon vise or the leg vise. I'm pretty sure Vic is talking about the leg vise.
JohnnyNoName
I think you could use whatever you want. My bench is SYP. I have soft maple for the leg vise chop, end cap, and deadman. I have walnut for the wagon vise block, leg vise guide, and the deadman guide. I used the maple and walnut because it's what I had for the size I needed. Go for it!
