sbarton22
I tired my hand at dyes this weekend. Normally, not my cup of tea, but I decided to get way outside my comfort zone. I applied per the directions (used a Briwax aniline dye). I let it dry longer than instructed. Then I went down my normal path of adding a penetrating oil to begin the finish process. When I did this, some of the dye started to pull up. Is that normal? Should I have let the dye dry overnight?
AceHoleInOne
I'm not familiar with Briwax dyes. However, I use Transtint and General Finishes dyes all the time. Yes you can remove some color if wiping over it. That's nothing to be alarmed at so long as it is minimal. Don't over wipe. Get whatever it is your applying on as your first coat. This will help to seal the dye in. Did your dye end up being streaky after the oil?
dwacker
Lifting is going to happen. If you dont have a sprayer you can get a rattle can sealer like shellac to seal the dye before finishing. Don
sbarton22
No streaking, and the lift was minimal. The rag I was applying the oil with just was showing color. I didn't think it was a problem, but I wanted some advice from someone with more experience than just picking up some dye and acting like a pro...like I did.
