rodger. Posted September 23, 2012 Report Posted September 23, 2012 It's about time for me to replace the bag on my DC, and I was going to purchse a cartridge filter. But since I live on a few acres with no close neighbours, I thought I could just dump the exhaust air outside and save my self the cost of a filter cartridge (and be 100% sure of no dust recirculation). I am not concerned about make up air or losing condioned air. I work with the bay doors open, and when it gets real cold, I prettty much pack up for the winter (sometimes I work in the basement on smaller projects with hand tools). Even when it's raining, I always leave one bay door open at least 1/4 way. I have a 1.5 HP delta 50 760 with 5" duct. If I remove the top bag, cover the hole with plywood and gasket, and attach a 5" fitting, I should be able to run a 5" line outdoors for exhaust air, right? Or does it make sense to increase the exhaust duct size larger than the intake? Does it make sense to keep the exhaust air line short, or is it irrelevant? The collector itself will still be in the shop, just the exhaust will be outdoors. Quote
JusticeBeaver Posted September 23, 2012 Report Posted September 23, 2012 One small consideration about venting outside if you work with walnut is that the dust will keep many plants from germinating. So if its near the wife's hydrangeas beware. As for engineering the system i wish i could be more help. Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk 2 Quote
Beechwood Chip Posted September 23, 2012 Report Posted September 23, 2012 As far as the exhaust length is concerned, I think drag is drag. It doesn't matter whether the drag is from a filter, or an inlet hose, or an exhaust duct. You do want to make sure that the exhaust duct doesn't clog, so you don't want sharp bends, and I'd keep it the same diameter as your inlet. I don't know what the ring on your DC looks like, but with the 5" exhaust gasket in the center you've got most of a Thien Separator. You might as well put in a Thien Separator so that most of the dust ends up in your collection bag and less goes out the exhaust. Quote
duckkisser Posted September 23, 2012 Report Posted September 23, 2012 don't see why you cant exhaust outside i would build a dust collection house though. what you do is get some big 55 gal drums and have the port feed directly into that. that way you can just haul your chips and dust to the dump or where ever. a buddy of mine had put his dust collector inside a large rubber maid closet type shed. he put his suction onto the barrel and his feed in line as well. that way the barrel collects all his big chips and his dust collector just takes the small stuff. the also drilled through the two separating walls and mounted a switch from his machine to the inside wall of his garage that controls the on and off of the collector. that way he never has to go outside to turn it on and off. Hybrid-woodworker Posted September 23, 2012 Report Posted September 23, 2012 Another consideration would be your current rodent population. Dust would not matter but planner/jointer shavings would be a good home to most mice. If you have a shop or yard cat, they may enjoy the increased population but I am guessing your wife may not. ;-) BRuce Quote
rodger. Posted September 23, 2012 Author Report Posted September 23, 2012 Maybe I wasn't clear in my op. The collector will stay inside. Only the exhaust will be sent outside (kid of like a clothes dryer). Quote
