wtnhighlander
To any of you that are in the building trades: I am preparing to re-stain the western red cedar ciding on my house. Debating varous brands for availability, durability, value and color selection. I'm looking hard at Cabot Deck and Siding stain, the alkyd/linseed formula stuff, in semi-solid. Any opinions to offer? Another choice that is readily available are the Olympic Elite products, but they cost a good deal more. I am open for other suggestions, if you have them. Thanks. jimmykx250
FWIW I just had my cedar lap sided house done a year ago with a sherwin wiliams product.I think pro-scape was the line. Very happy so far however it was not the cheapist stuff out there. I also know sikkins products are very good as well.
wtnhighlander
I hear a lot of good about Sikkens, but no local dealers. I'll look into SW, they have a store in town.
Firehawk
I would look into painting it over staining. I did mine and it held up over twice as long.
wtnhighlander
Preferring to stay with an oil stain, as the rough sawn and sun-blistered wood surface is likely to result in paint ( or the solid 'stains' ) peeling within a year or two. The stain may fade, but at least it won't peel. Anyhow, based on formulation, colors, availability and price, it looks like we'll probably use the oil/alkyd version of 'Acri-shield' from PPG/Porter, in the Semi-opaque variety.
