Workofwood
finishing off a desk and the customer wants a leather top. I've never used leather before. I'd assume I should recess the area that we receive the faux leather inside the frame? How deep should the rebate be? Then what would be the best adhesive to use? wdwerker
My guess would be 1/8" deep , contact cement and faux leather ? If you can't get the client to commit to the real stuff then head in another direction !
Craig
I've only used real leather, the recess is slightly less than the thickness of the leather, it will shrink when it dries from contact with water in the adhesive. Wallpaper paste is recommended for the leather.
tedfmcm
Never done leather before, but i assume you'll be wrapping the leather around the edges to create a smooth edge...would you want to increase you depth by this amount around the outside of the insert? Workofwood
Ted, that's something I'm not sure about. So I cut the leather to the exact size of the rebate or do I try to pull it over the edges and then attach the frame? The inside of the desk is some veneered oak ply and the frame will be a 3/4" *3/4" edgeing. If I were to try and wrap it around, I'm not sure how I would fasten the edging because I would no longer have a solid wood surface to glue to. Any advice?
