Llama
Ok... Is there a good yet relatively inexpensive of locating the holes for this style hinge? That's not just a pretty cap over the screws. It's a lever that expands a plastic thing inside of the holes. I was able to get the test hinge installed, and drilling the cups aren't a problem. But, I have one shot at making sure these things are lined up perfectly. Any jig out there to locate these? I'm not sure if the Rockler one will work for this... Anyone used these before? TerryMcK
Those are Euro hinges Mel. Google Euro hinge jig. I'm sure you must have something local to you supplying them. http://www.amazon.com/Euro-Tools-Concealed-Hinge-Boring/sim/B003CLKRO8/2
Llama
I've seen those, but wasn't sure if the jig would work with the cam style locker instead of the other ones that use screws. I guess I'm over thinking this as usual. Thanks
dwacker
If they are just inserta's then a drill press is best, no jig needed. NO jigs are not universal you need the right jig for the hinge if you are going to drill by hand using a jig. NO you do not need to buy a jig just a piece of scrap wood is all that is needed if you don't have a drill press.
Bob Lang
Most likely you need 8mm holes. While most European hardware is in increments of 32mm, the distance between the two holes on either side of the hinge cup as well as the distance from the edge to the center of the holes will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. That keeps customers who have invested in a hinge insertion machine "loyal". Blum may have a jig available, if not the specs for the hole locations should be on their website. If you have a drill press you can locate the holes in a jig, then use the jig to bore the holes in the doors. Your biggest issue will be wearing out the holes if your jig is made of wood, plywood or mdf. If you only have a few doors to do you should be okay. If you have a bunch ahead of you, McMaster Carr has press fit bushings for making a long-lasting boring jig.
dwacker
Blum hinges have a 22.5mm hole pattern. Dowel offset is 9.5mm You only need a 9.5mm spacer for your drill press fence to speed the process.
