Cole vs longworth?

Well, best I can splain, cole jaws are for your chuck and bolt on in place of your regular jaws. Longsworth is a stand alone set of jaws that are normally gripped by your chuck. Cole jaws, you move the buttons to change sizes and longsworth has a spiral that centers and auto adjusts. Difference is cole jaws tie up your chuck and are manually set for the size of the bowl.

Do the same function, just a different way of clamping. Some turners like one way and others like the other. I own neither but have a longsworth on my someday list.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4AbtlIaEwUQ the cole chuck you have to remov the rubber pins to move them around takes time to unscrew and move them.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEJfrO9CJBU longsworth can be screwed close and tightend on your work without remove them from your chuck.

i bought the cole chuck so that i could turn uneven turnings or rectangle boxes like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXwUn80GU-s

I have and use both.  The Cole jaws for my SuperNova chuck hold smaller bowls but can't grip the larger bowls.  The longworth chuck that I made will hold bowls up to 14 inches.

I replaced the small bumpers on the Cole chuck with longer screws and rubber lab stoppers (one hole) that are an inch long and tapered.  This gives me a better grip.  These are the same stoppers I used on the longworth chuck.

In both cases, I use the tailstock as long as possible as a safety measure.  I remove it when I'm ready for the final turning and sanding of the foot.
