Josh Mackintosh
Hi all Does anyone recognize this design? It is a 20th century telephone table/ chair, constructed of what I think is teak. Many Thanks Josh
TRBaker
Hello Josh. Welcome to the forum. I'm not familiar with the design, but it's a nice looking piece. Did you buy this or are you contemplating buying it?
Jasahan
Kind of looks like the om symbol http://www.religionfacts.com/hinduism/symbols/aum.htm
Marco Divetta
I think the design might be Malaysian, it looks like some symbols on chairs in a local restaurant ... Also judging by the pictures I don't think its teak, the annual rings are a bit to far apart and it's very dark .... A piece that size made from teak would be quite heavy. wilburpan
The character is the word 福,which is pronounced “foo”, and means “good fortune” or “luck”. The middle character is actually the same as the outside ones. It’s just written in a more stylized manner, much like choosing different fonts for English words. The overall style of the chair is typical for Chinese furniture.
