using regular blades for dado stacking?

As long as the teeth can be stacked between each other, it should work fine; likely only possible with rip blades. One catch is that two 1/8" blades stacked like you suggest won't make 1/4" groove. The plate of the blade is < 1/8" and as you'll have the blades "plate to plate", with the teeth interleaved on the circumference, the kerf they'll cut isn't 1/4".

need to make a 1/4 in kerf cut for a box joint, wondering if i stack two identical blades in my saw would that be ok and would it work

Probably, if you shim it right. You need a blade with a flat grind, or an ATB+Raker. It might be easier to make one cut on the far side of your cut from the fence, and shim your cut over by 1/8" and make a 2nd cut.

There are lots of ways to skin a cat.

This is America, you can do whatever you want.

Agree, this is the best way to make this cut without a dado stack. Also agree it's best to use a rip blade (flat grind) to make the cut.
