Cliff
And that is a pretty good place to have a simple hub. It's not going to cause a ton of problems. I used to do that at my old job, bring in a hub, connect it to my desk's port then use my laptop along with my work computer. totally couldn't happen where I work now. I think. I'm not sure. I'm not dumb enough to try. The military takes it's security pretty seriously, though usually only against internal employees, not so much against foreign countries. Nobody sells hubs anymore. A 5 port switch is about $10...

I've not looked at either one in a decade or more. The crap I'm buying so far above what I need in my home that it's ridiculous.

Yeah I remember when hubs were in the 100s and switches in the 1000s LOL Last time I was forced to buy a hub was to put together a mixed RJ-45/BNC coaxial network. Things have gotten a lot simpler these days.
Cliff
Sure enough. Now when my switch burns out I hop on ebay and find a 24-48 port gigabit switch that is being sold for a low price. Probably used from a company going out of business or upgrading. Has served me pretty well. I've really been out of networking for a long time now. I graduated with my telecommunciations degree in 2003, got my cisco certification (ccna) then never used any of it and went back for a programming degree and thats what I've been doing since. I never thought I'd drop 40k on a degree to help me wire my house and nothing else.
