georgepag
I have a Baldor, 2 wheel bench grinder. The machine takes 7" grey wheels of different grits. i believe they are 36 and 80 grit. I would like to switch to wheels that are better suited to woodworking tools but I cannot find much in a 7" wheel size. I can put a 6" in on or take of the guards off to mount an 8" wheel. What are the advantages / disadvantages of an 8" wheel over a 6 wheel" ? Any suggestions? Thanks, George
wtnhighlander
A 6" wheel develops less surface speed for the same rpm, than an 8" wheel would. Might make a difference in heat buildup in the tool, and possibly increase the explosive force if the stone decides to shatter. NEVER run a stone grinding wheel with the guard removed. Also keep the tool rest within 1/8" of the stone to avoid jamming a tool between them.
bleedinblue
Slower speed would be more preferable and would build less heat, right? I'd go smaller than the factory size, but not bigger.
