Brendon_t
The wife has decided that this weekend, I'll be building a new patio cover about 12x16 to replace the patio cover that was old and destroyed in a wind storm at the end of last year. Before hitting the interwebs and that trove of mostly crap. I'mpretty handy in diy stuff but wanted to ask for any best practices you guys have found to be helpful. Things I'm unsure about being what is the accepted rise/run to shed water, yet not be a steeple Should 4x4 verticals be sufficient? I will have a 2x10 ledger attached to the house with hangers, what size beam should be used to span the far end? I'm assuming there will be a 4x4 on each corner and one in the center so max span should be 8'
Tom King
Should be in here somewhere: http://www.awc.org/pdf/codes-standards/publications/span-tables/AWC-SpanTables2015-1505.pdf
OldSouthWoodCraft
Brendon what are you planning to use for the actual cover? A solid roof like metal or shingles or were you thinking about using a flexible fabric type of covering? Brendon_t
Thanks Tom I'll grab a dictionary and go to work. The fist word I read was modulus elasticity... Um ya The top will either be 2x2 slat or translucent corrugated plastic panels. Both light weight
OldSouthWoodCraft
This may be a little quicker than learning statics and dynamics of load bearing structures. I knew I would use my engineering degree for something one day. Lol. http://www.awc.org/codes-standards/calculators-software/spancalc Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk
Marmotjr
If it doesn't snow in where you live, (and I hope it doesn't!), then my unlearned opinion is that as long as the water runs off in a timely fashion........
