Finishing a redwood table

To clarify my earlier statement, poly will absolutely NOT 'harden' the soft wood. It will, however, create a pretty hard shell over the surface, and go a long way toward preventing the sort of minor dents and dings that a hard wax oil product won't. Kinda like a chocolate dip makes a hard shell over a soft-serve ice cream cone.

On the other hand, being harder and thus more brittle, fine scratches and chips will show in the poly, that might be absorbed by the hard wax oil, or at least be simple to buff away.
