Popular Post gee-dub
Someone elsewhere finally converted his drill press sacrificial insert to a round shape. This finally go me off my butt to do the same. For those that have not had these conversations . . . a replaceable backer for your drill press table is nice. A square one, off center, is nice in that it gives you four (or eight if you can flip) areas to destroy per insert. This is what I did for years. A round one, off center, gives you a variable number of uses depending on what you are doing but, assuredly more than four or eight. As usual, setup on these things is 80% of the work so, once setup to make sacrificial items, I make a bunch.
Gary Beasley
Some brands of printshop paper drills use the same concept. You can buy the round wood blocks by the case for them. Think they are about 3” across and 1/2” thick.

derekcohen
Nice Gee-Dub I wrote an article about this about 2 years ago, and it is somewhere on this forum. There is a copy on my website now, having added a page on power tools and machines a few months back ... http://www.inthewoodshop.com/Powered Tools and Machinery/BuildingADrillPressTable.html Don't forget, the circle needs to be offset from the centre of the drill bit to maximise use ... Gary Beasley
Heres an example https://www.mybinding.com/1/3/challenge-paper-drill-blocks Theres also machines that use a rectangular stick that gets slid sideways in a groove as the surface gets used up. Those may be easier to adapt to as you can make those sticks easily. https://www.mybinding.com/catalog/product/view/id/40809/s/lassco-wizer-drill-strips/category/2593/
