Popular Post curlyoak
I occasionally changed the knives and nothing else. I am right at home and very comfortable operating all the tools in the shop. To work on them is intimidating for me. At the time my 15" jet thickness planer broke down a new neighbor that is a very good diesel mechanic told me he knew he could fixe it even though he never worked on one. He was right. And now that I watched I am less intimidated but glad he lives nearby. There was a rod holding the fingers that disallows the wood going backwards that came loose on one end. He relocated it in place and I bought a locking nut to keep it in place. Since I had a very capable support he was willing to help me change the gear box oil, and set some new knives. Made a test run and it planed like glass. I did express in the gauge that I was supposed to have come with the tool that I will find one day. And by then this new one will be lost. The gauge made quick and perfect work on setting the knives. I hope the machine is good for the next 20 years. Maybe I should look at the belts also... Turns out the neighbor/mechanic is 4th generation mechanic. He told me when he was 9 Grandad would yell out let the kid do it whenever a chainsaw came in the door. That was his beginning...
