Brenda
Old trundle sewing machine cabinet. Converting into a vanity table for granddaughters. The current finish I “Think” is shellac. Should I strip this down and then prime and then use my latex paint? Thanks in advance
wtnhighlander
A lot depends on what condition the existing finish is in. In many cases you can just clean it thoroughly, give it a liggt scuffing with fine sandpaper, and apply paint. My personal experience with latex pain on furniture hasn't been good. I would suggest a mineral acrylic, such as General Finishes 'Milk Paint' line, and followed by a coat of water-borne polyurathane. This combination is seemingly indestructable, where latex tend to remain soft and more easily damaged. But that is just my limited experience.
Coop
My brother has been doing various projects, mainly cabinets, for friends and friends of friends for the last couple of years and swears by Benjamin Moore cabinet grade paint and their best primer, followed by a couple of coats of water borne poly. I am refinishing an old desk for a friend and will take it to brother this week for painting, so we’ll see.
