Popular Post oldman_pottering
Finally got around to finishing this little toy on the weekend, as simple as it is I have had a few learning curves already, the first one being how to use short pieces of timber in the thicknesser which @gee-dub helped me out with and that worked a treat, next was making the wheels without drilling the centre hole all the way through. The way I got around this was to use a forstner bit first to mark the centre and then make a small recess in the blank, drill the complete wheel with a hole saw, use a roundover bit in the router to shape the wheels and then use plugs to cover the centre recess. Using the roundover bit gave me a bit of grief as you can see in one of the photos the wheel already has gutter rash from the bit biting in and giving me a bit of a scare. In one of the photos I have shown how I used the router without a fence and I have to admit that it felt a bit sketchy having my fingers on those wheels close to the bit so I made a push stick but I still had some problems with the bit biting. Should I have used a fence to support the stock ? I'm not real keen on having that feeling of the router biting the stock and throwing it again. Last learning curve was a nice simple one and that was to sand and finish the wheels before fitting them in place, that was a pain in the neck to sand them while they were fitted up
Mark J
Yeah, routing the wheels seems like a risky operation.

gee-dub
If I was going to do a lot of them I might look at a tool designed for this. At over $100 for a name brand I would probably just buy the wheels pre-made. You can still burn up scrap on the bodies ;-) There are times I will spend an inordinate amount of time on some simple item simply because I want to. Other times I don't see that my hand made version adds any owner value to certain things.

I think pre-made wheels may be the better option and I understand about burning time because you can and not necessarily adding any value to the result, both good points thanks
