Popular Post Chestnut
A long time ago i made a wooden squatty potty for my wife. Ever since then my MIL has been harassing me to build one for her. Well this Christmas Santa is going to deliver one to her. I made a pair as a good friend of hers wanted one also. If you are unfamiliar with the concept please do a google search. The design was intended to be simple for quick construction as well as to be able to blend in to more home aesthetics than something more complicated. I used some sort of Mahogany species for this my guess is it's African mahogany but i have no idea. I'm not a huge fan of the Mahogany umbrella species for what ever reason so this is a great way to rid myself of stock I've picked up over the years. The design height is around 7". The top is attached with 3 figure 8 fasteners. With the legs being attached perpendicular there shouldn't be any wood movement issues. All of the surfaces were hand planed, i was able to use zero sand paper. The interlocking grain caused some localized tear out but it was pretty minor. Finish was 5 coats of minwax wipe on poly, my usual go to finish. The one nice thing about the boring strait grain material was it allowed me to use a bunch of odd off cuts edge glued to be efficient with material use. Can you spot the glue lines in the piece below? The color looks off on that one piece but these were both made from 1 board, there is some color variation in person but not as drastic as what is shown. Goes to show that wood is a natural material and color will vary even in the same board. Don't tell my wife but this is what it looks like in practice. She'd probably loose it if she knew i posed a picture of our bathroom. Yes the finish on our shower stool is in AWFUL shape, what ever i applied was a terrible choice and I never should have went with it.
