candlerain
Hi guys... I am VERY new to woodworking. I got myself a bunch of nice tools but I am wondering where to get nice wood for projects like the cutting board that Marc did. He used maple and purple heart I believe and they were nice chunks... I went to Home Depot and Rona and they do not have this kind of wood (only some maple boards). Where do you guys get nice wood for your projects? Thanks a million, Pascal
andreas
What city are you in? In Ottawa, the best place is KJP. http://www.kjpselecthardwoods.com/ Definitely avoid the big box stores. You'll pay way too much for very poor quality wood. Check your yellow pages and look for the word 'hardwood'.
Hans_Christopher
If you are in the Toronto area try peacock lumber in Oshawa or Burlington Exotics in Burlignton. Burlignton exotics is a better choice for more exotic species. Peacock lumber is great still really nice people good wood and more just nothing super exotic like purpleheart. Cheers Hans Christopher
duckkisser
you could also find some small mills in your area. try calling and talking to cabinet makers, counter makers, tree removal companies, they might be able to point you in the right area. thats how i found two of my guys in the local area and they have given me some realy nice scrap wood that i have used for small projects. you will get mostly just domestic woods since its what he cuts down or get delivered to his house. Jim Heinbuch
Windsor Plywood is located in some Cdn cities and has limited stock of some exotics. Good wood is always pricey though. You could also mail order but I don't know what the issues would be if you tried to cross the border.

Stephens_Shop
Windsor plywood can be an easy sourcefor exotics and local hardwoods but in Vancouver I find their prices quite high. I would look at the options of mills or try a search on exotic hardwood suppliers in your area and then compare the prices. Stephen.
Cynthia in BC
Stephen, I'd try Craigslist too. You can always put in an ad asking if anyone has any. You never know. Also, sometimes when you know some other woodworkers, you'd be amazed what others will share.
