Boatworks Today
Hardware Stores. Around me I have a chain called True Value and buy it by the gallon. I don't use all that much "paint thinner" but for varnish in a pinch I'll use mineral spirits (specifically Sunnyside brand). That being said I don't typically thin my varnish unless I'm spraying.. For brushing, no thinner. I do all my basecoats with a clear 2-part epoxy (west system 105 resin and 207 clear hardener)...
AceHoleInOne
I can find it cheaper at the Sherwin Williams paint supply store by the house. Comes in a plastic gallon jug which is easier to pour from than the 1 gallon steel cans.
Nick2cd
Can paint thinner and mineral spirits be used interchangeably? Could u use paint thinner to thin salad bowl finish for a cutting board?
Bombarde16
AFAIK, they can be interchanged: Paint thinner, mineral spirits, turpentine and naptha will all work to cut the viscosity of solvent-based finishes and drying oils. They do have their differences, though: e.g. Paint thinner is cheap but smells worse than the other three combined. Naptha flashes off quite fast and is useful if you want to speed the time between coats. And so on and so on.
