UKfan
I have been lurking and watching this forum for a bit and love the atmosphere and people I have experienced and read. I wanted to share a story with everyone here, My father made furniture over 30 years ago and gave his cut off scrap to my uncle. Well the furniture business is long gone as is my father who passed away back in 2005. In the past couple of year i have had the time and money to start putting together a small shop in my garage. I wish I had been able to do this prior to my fathers passing but life didn't work out that way. My skill are crude but improving as I tackle more projects. A few months ago my uncle contacted me to see if I would be interested in picking a few pieces of wood left over from my fathers furniture shop 30 years ago. I thought he may have a few board feet of walnut or cherry and said that I would love to pick it up. I drove the two and half hours to his house with my truck and was surprised to find that my pick up wasn't big enough to pick up all the wood stacked in his garage. So i came back a few weeks later with a trailer and tried again to load up the wood. I found cherry, walnut, lots of oak, bass wood, and close to 30 turning blanks for tables and bed posts. This was a treasure trove of wood. My uncle wouldn't let me pay for any of it, his only conditions were that I help him clean his garage once it was loaded and help him with a few project if he comes to visit my wife and I. I happily agreed with his deal. Now I was faced with the problem of what to do with all this lumber, so first step first. I cleared out all the christmas decoration and put them in the guest room and made space to build some form of storage.
UKfan
I was talking with my wife about how to store the lumber and she brought up the video by Marc that I had watched awhile back where he was building his storage rack. I said what the heck and decided to give it a try and my wife said she wanted to help. So after a quick run to town for materials and supplies, we cleaned up the cleared out space that had been occupied by the Christmas decorations and got started My wife got really into this project and was very eager to help So after a long weekend of assembly we have all the lumber from my uncle stored. Now the hard part how to put all this wood to use...
fransikaner
Looks like you have a wonderful heirloom from your father, courtesy of your uncle. You have a great opportunity to craft some products for your family in memory of your dad. Thanks for sharing!
Sac
Great story, thanks for sharing. I imagine that it would be pretty neat to have a collection of wood that came from my dad 30 years ago. The hardest part is going to be what to use it on. Good luck.
JohnnyNoName
Thanksfor sharing. Everytime you work with the lumber, it's like you'll be working with your Dad. I went through some of the same things with my Dad's old tools. He wasn't much of a user, but more of a "collector" of tools. I enjoy picking them up and slicing some fibers with them. Feels lilke he's whatching over my shoulder. Jonathan =========================
wdwerker
I have a few planks and tools from my Grandad's shop . The wood is used only on special projects and the tools kept sharp and stored with care. I am so glad I got to spend time in the shop with him as a young man.
