willurd
Hey everyone! My name is William. I'm 26 and I live in Los Angeles. I became interested in woodworking recently and have been watching a ton of videos (YouTube, The Wood Whisperer, etc). I've been trying to find a place where I can get someone to teach me woodworking but I haven't had much luck. I know that Cerritos College has a pretty extensive course offering in woodworking, which is awesome, but I'd much prefer something closer to where I live and a little more accelerated than college courses; I typically learn pretty quickly and I always found school a little slow. Also, I live in a pretty small apartment so I don't have anywhere to put tools and a workbench (and I can't make a ton of noise), so I've been searching for places where you can rent workspace, also to no avail. I have a 9-6 job, so I can only do nights during the week. If anyone knows where I can get instruction, please let me know! I'm interested in woodworking because I love the idea of creating beautiful and functional pieces with the only inputs essentially being blocks of wood and my imagination. I want to create heirloom boxes (got to impress the ladies!), instruments (I play acoustic guitar), wall-mounted racks and hangers, shelves, and other types of furniture. I'm especially interested in eventually doing things like intricate inlays, trim (sorry I don't know what it's called...) and other kinds of "designer" things. And adding secret compartments to my pieces :-D I have so many ideas already, I just can't wait to get started!
willurd
Oh and turning. I don't know why but using a lathe looks so fun!
duckkisser
glad to have you willurd you will probably like turning. when i turn it feels like the wood is shaping with your bare hands and you can make a project in a matter of hours instead of days.
