dodgeram99
I got a samsung tablet as an early christmass gift. I can watch the free videos but can't watch the guild build videos.
thewoodwhisperer
Hmm.... might be hard for me to troubleshoot. The videos should work on any device that can handle Flash or HTML5, which pretty much covers everything out there. I wonder if there's a plugin or something missing from the browser that would enable the video....
Trip
==> I can watch the free videos but can't watch the guild build videos to clarify, you want watch Marc's videos from his free site, but not the subscription site? At one point, Marc had a non-password protected video on the subscription site -- if it's still there, can you play that one?
thewoodwhisperer
All videos on the Guild site are actually protected at this point.
Trip
Maybe put-up 1 unprotected to see if he can get it... that may help troubleshoot...
thewoodwhisperer
Authentication really shouldn't have any impact on this. We actually picked up a Nexus recently for testing purposes (for the app) so I'll be able to do some testing on my end. I'll report back. thewoodwhisperer
OK after digging into this a bit, the short version of the story is that Android doesn't seem to like the streaming version of our videos. Something in our encoding settings apparently. We always try to make our videos as compatible as possible with all devices so I am working on an alternative, though the file size will be a bit larger. Once I have the new compression settings squared away, I'll make sure I use them for our future postings and I'll update the Dogon Platform bed build too. It's going to be a while before I can find the time to re-encode and upload new file versions for older build though. Thanks for the heads up on this. dodgeram99
I can download them and they play. It just from the guild sight they wont. What happens is, ther is a loading wheel that act's like itsngoing to load. Then it just stops and goes back to the web page.
dodgeram99
Also on the free sight . There are no commands for the video. Pause ,stop etc.
thewoodwhisperer
Not much we can do about the free site videos. Frankly, Im surprised Android has so many Flash and HTML5 conflicts and weirdness. Never thought Id say that watching web video on an Apple device is easier than on an Android device. Southwood
I just picked up a Nexus as well. Having troubles everywhere viewing videos everywhere. Little bit upsetting to say the least. Got a friend that is android crazy and he is looking in to it for me. If he comes up with anything, I will let you know.
thewoodwhisperer
Yeah surprised me too based on the Android vs Apple rhetoric I've been reading for the last couple years. Hey, can someone try the first Dogon Platform Bed Video (Design & Planning). Not the downloads, just the embedded version.
dodgeram99
Marc I just tried the digon video and they work perfict. I can play pause and stop. It must be the old ones that have a problem.
dodgeram99
Ok well the 3rd video playes. The one with you sitting on the floor. The one after that wont.
thewoodwhisperer
Yeah I only re-encoded one video at this point for testing purposes. Trying to find the perfect settings before I change the rest.

Trip
When you get to the bottom of this, would be interested in what encoding changes you make. I sometimes post a vid or two and want to keep the android folks happy.....
thewoodwhisperer
If you're uploading to a video host and simply embedding the video on your site, you probably have nothing to worry about. Most hosts do a pretty good job of handling compression of your source material. The only reason the Guild videos were/are a problem is because I am serving the videos myself, including dowloadable versions and the streaming version. So it was the streaming version of the file that Android didn't like. For compression I use Apple's Compressor pre-sets and modify them to my needs. I still haven't figured out why this particular streaming file doesn't work. To look at it's properties, it should be fine. So my solution was to use another pre-set that I know works and simply dial down the bitrate. Unfortunately, this still produces a larger file than I want. But it's either that or no love for Android. And honestly, I don't even know if this is Android across the board or just the Nexus tablets or what. So, that's about all I know at this point. I probably won't be going back to old videos and updating the streaming version any time soon. Well at least not until I have a bunch of Android users making requests. So far, the iPad crowd is much louder.
dodgeram99
Actually down loading them is working out better then I thought. I get a chance to watch them at work. This way when I get home I can't eewatxh them and have a good idea what to do next.
