duckkisser Posted January 21, 2013 Report Posted January 21, 2013 hey does anyone know if it would be hard to make a articulating swing arm so i can pull my dest lamp down to me from the ceiling. i have it mounted to the work bench but its kind of in the way and i would like to have it from above to open up more space. this way i can just reach up and pull it towards me to light up any small projects im working on. Byrdie Posted January 21, 2013 Report Posted January 21, 2013 Search YouTube for Ron Walters. He has a video on making an articulated arm for a lamp or other uses. Mathias Wandel reposts alot of his stuff. Quote
calmari Posted January 21, 2013 Report Posted January 21, 2013 I'd say a series of box joints at then ends, you can change the number and length of segments to get the extension you need. Then connect some springs between the segments to hold the them in position. Hardest part I think would be getting the spring tension right. Quote
duckkisser Posted January 22, 2013 Author Report Posted January 22, 2013 dude are you messing with me your name is don clark my real name is dan clark.......is this my brother? byrdie nice thought but i think you thinking of this problem is that i dont have wall space but i do of ceiling space. is it possible to change a articulating desk lamp like the one i have and reverse it so the spring tension allows me to move it around? seems like it would just pop strait out rather then stay in a bent shape. CT Proctor Posted January 22, 2013 Report Posted January 22, 2013 Why not just buy a trouble light on a cord reel? If the lamp part doesn't work for you cut it off and put your own lamp on. Quote
duckkisser Posted January 22, 2013 Author Report Posted January 22, 2013 i think that would just get in the way i need some way to direct the light to my bench top but i can push it up out of the way when its not needed. this is ideal but your talking big bucks. this is what im using Quote
wdwerker Posted January 22, 2013 Report Posted January 22, 2013 I got a cheap articulating lamp at IKEA for about $10. It has a block that clamps to a tabletop then the stem of the lamp plugs into a hole. It can go in vertically or horizontally. Rig a board hanging from above with a horizontal hole in it. Saw a slot from the edge to the hole , adding a bolt will let you clamp the stem . I use compact flouresent flood lamps in mine for the most light and less heat. I have about 6 of them scattered around the shop. It is easy to modify the mount. Quote

Yep, that's the one I'm thinking of. Replace one of the connections with a bolt and a wing nut and you can lock it at any length of extension. Won't matter if it's coming out from the wall or down from the ceiling. Extend it to where you want, tighten the wing nut and get to work. Loosen the wing nut, push it back up, tighten the wing nut and walk away. Don't forget to turn out the light when your done! Quote
