Paulo Gonçalves
Hi everyone, I just got my hands on this piece of wood but I have what species it is... I got it from an old milling that closed some years ago, it worked mostly with imported wood (to Portugal that is!). The wood has been sitting outdoors since then. The board is 245x50x1600mm in dimensions, and very heavy! Any idea of what it might be?
Tpt life
Ipe. Looks like some we were supplied with that was called palope.http://hobbithouseinc.com/personal/woodpics/ipe.htm Welcome to the forum!
Paulo Gonçalves
Thanks! It does look like Ipe. Now I just have to find a good use to it! Cheers
Tpt life
Fades gray without treatment and can look black with rain. It weathers quite well and is used here as decking quite often. It can be oily so I would wipe with a solvent or hit it with shellac before a top coat. I cut house numbers out of it at my old location. Eric.
The singular of species is species, not specie. Ipe is a hardcore rot-resistant wood. They rebuilt the Atlantic City Boardwalk entirely out of ipe...until Hurricane Sandy turned it into a poop stain. I don't personally find it that appealing for furniture. If it were mine, I'd save it for some project intended for outdoor use. Welcome aboard, Paulo.
wdwerker
I built a coffee table for a clients back porch out of IPE . The granite top was from scrap leftover from the kitchen. It can be kinda splintery and has a unique smell when cut.
Paulo Gonçalves
Thanks for the tips and for the welcoming. I will probably save it until something asks for it. I might be getting some different board from that place so I will do a check list in the end! Cheers
phinds
Just FYI, it's not a "specie" at all since the only thing that the word "specie" referes to is currency in the form of coins. "Species" is both singular and plural and both refer to things botanical.
Byrdie
Not just botanical but groups of living things. We are the "Human Species."
Rick A McQuay
BTW, ipe is very hard and will dull carbon or hss blades very quickly. Go with carbide.
phinds
Not just botanical but groups of living things. We are the "Human Species." You are right of course. I tend to forget that it is ALL living things.
