woodwright Posted October 24, 2014 Report Share Posted October 24, 2014 I work mostly with American hardwoods and typically finish my projects with Sam Maloof's tung oil, linseed oil, and beeswax formula following his two-step multi-coat process. That's after I sand up to 400-grit. I get a real smooth, buttery satin finish but I'm wondering if there should be, or if there is a way, to achieve a more reflective finish. Up close the finish looks real nice and feels great but from a distance it just doesn't reflect light in the way i would like it to. I've noticed in Sam Maloof's books that his project photos are very light reflective. Beautiful shiny polishes on edges and surfaces. Is that maybe just the result of fancy photography or did he really achieve those shiny surfaces with his hand-rubbed finishing method?
