DougD
I read that the thread tap and die size for brooms and painters extension poles is 3/4" x 5 TPI. All I can find in most woodworking stores is 3/4" x 6 TPI. Does anyone know a source for the 3/4" x 5 TPI size tool set? Thanks, Doug
Gilgaron
I Googled acme thread cutting dies and stumbled across this: http://www.widell.com/ Looks like you might have to submit a quote for one, but they appear to make acme dies. Jim L.
Are you absolutely sure about the 5 tpi? Grizzly sells a 3/4 x 6 die and advertises that it will repair your broken broom handle: http://www.grizzly.com/products/Wood-Threading-3-4-Die/G1868
DougD
Jim L. I did stop by a WoodCraft shop in Portland, Or, this past weekend with the painters extension pole. The 6 TPI die I tried would partially start to thread but then bind. This is a metal thread which is not as loose a fit as are some broom handles. The store rep agreed it was not the correct thread. I believe the Grizzly 6 TPI will work for a wooden broom handle but it would move some of the threads. Doug
Arminius
You might have to make sure that it is not a metric threading, depending on where it was made. There are several inch-gauge threads that will do almost 2 revolutions and then bind with a close metric size.
DougD
Good point Arminius, I check on that. Thanks, Doug
