a1606myrsclm
I have been searching for a finish for my back porch. It is Ipe, I love the look of this wood, only wish I could keep a wet look. I found a product called "Super Shield Fluoropolymer", it is a multi layer coating that completely seals the surface of the wood. And it will last for 20 years. Has anyone heard of this product, the website claims it can be use on anything. Here is one of the websites, http://shieldproducts.com/

wdwerker
I used Waterlox tung oil on a outdoor table base made of Ipe. I looked wonderful. No idea how long it will last but it will be easy to touch up or refinish.
sbarton22
Sikkens Cetol is what I use on my deck and what the firms here spec on a lot of the exterior wood. The finish should last two years or so. When applied properly, the wood will look freshly cut and actually be moisture resistant...as in the water will bubble on the surface. Ipe is a damn thick species. You might want to test a corner or side on how well it will absorb the finish. http://www.sikkens.us/en/about/Pages/default.aspx
Jfitz
I've used Cabots Australian Timber Oil on a mahogany deck with good results. Still need to do it every 2 years or so - rain and sun are brutal on pretty much everything. I've heard that many people like the Sikkens products. Bobby Slack
I have a deck with ipe and used Sikkens Cetol 1 for the first coat and Cetol 23 for two more coats. Looks great. The best part of using Sikkens Cetol 23 is that the following applications for maintenance in the future will be easy. I finished several front doors with this finish and they still look fantastic. No cracks .. Still perfect (even 5 years after) Avoid Man-O-War or hard finishes because you want the finish to have enough elasticity to move with the wood. Good luck.
a1606myrsclm
I contacted a man in Florida, said he has been using the product since 1976. The only thing he cautioned me about was the application procedure is very involved. I went to their website ( the one I listed) it doesn't seem that bad. He emphasized the thickness was very important. I've decided to try the stuff.
Popular Post a1606myrsclm
I was going back through my post to see when I finished my back porch, didn't realize I never share the results. I bought 2 gallons of the product back in 2013. One gallon is called Fluoroblend and the other is Teak Shield, the second one gets an activator add to it. I only ended using a quart of the Fluoroblend, and half gallon of the Teak Shield to cover the porch, that was one coat of each. Here are pictures from the first time I did it: August 2013 One coat of the Fluoroblend. Lightly sanded with 220. Applying the Teak Shield One coat of Teak Shield. The product looked great, glossy like my wife was looking for… I had some of the Teak Shield left and I let it cure in the container. It feels a little rubbery almost like a super ball but not as hard. But on the floor, in a thin coat in doesn't feel rubbery, very smooth. I went into it skeptical, the owner of the company claimed it would last for 10 years. It did not, but I did get a finish that lasted 4’ish years. With no maintenance, I bet it would have lasted longer with more coats. Parts still looked good especially by the door where it got less weather. Now I'm out and will explore another finish in say another 4 years. Now for the update…. Here’s what it looks like 4 years later…. Overall not bad, it let the wood gray at most the joints. All the board face seem to last, the areas around the edge of the porch is where our ferns hang, the water drips and lays. But, it was looking too ruff for us, so it was time refinish. This time I put on two coats of Fluoroblend and one coat of Teak Shield. And here are some more pictures: Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Coop
I would have probably waited 4 more years as well as it looked. Great job!
