The most intrieging wood working tool I ever saw was an automatic clapboard cutting device. It took a bolt of pine about 8' long and 12" in diameter, made a cut 5" deep, radially to the center of the bolt. Then reversed back through the same kerf, rotated at a preset angle, and repeated until the bolt had made one revolution. I saw that particular machine at the Maine History Museum in Agusta.
