wouldwurker
Mitre key time. Still getting some mileage out of that old carriage jig, but this is its last lap. Seems fitting that its first purpose was this very toy box, and this will likely be its last.
..Kev
Love those jigs! Mine's built a little different but, serves the same purpose..

wouldwurker
Purple Heart. Those 1/8th strips from woodcraft go a long way for keys. I know there's a method to the orientation of the grain for glue up strength, but I've never bothered to care. Haven't had one pop out yet I have some leftover Mara scraps..might try a few of those too.

Eric.
Nice job, JoJo! You gonna go water based to keep that pine white?

wouldwurker
I'll use water based finish when they pry the VOC's from my cold dead hands!

wouldwurker
Haha. I just don't dig the water based stuff on anything but painted surfaces just yet...

wouldwurker
Ok....I'll do a few test boards. Hopefully I still see some Chatoyancy. Chatoyancy, by the way is my stripper girlfriend.
Eric.
You won't see chatoyance in that pine...only figured woods.

Gary
Really nice, Vinny. I have to pick up some purple heart... that color and contrast looks so cool.
wouldwurker
You won't see chatoyance in that pine...only figured woods. I've seen more 'hologram' in pine than most of the hard woods of which I've finished. Something about the adjacent soft and hard fibers maybe? (I think I read that..about why it's such a pain to chisel). Even the boring grain really gets 3D. Picking through the 'craft pine' boards at Lowes, you can find quite a bit of...I'll call it birds eye, I guess. Finishes really pretty with oil based wiping varnish. wouldwurker
Majority of the sanding complete. Did a real quick test board to check out a few finishes. The waterbase polyacrylic still yellowed it a bit, not as white as I hoped. Watco Butcher Block looked pretty, and Amber. Similar to arm r seal. Waterlox actually came on a bit blotchy, much like stain. Still looks pretty but smells like gasoline. I'll likely go with the butcher block Wiping varnish. If anything, for the wipe on wipe off ease-of-use. I have company in town for a few days tomorrow so likely no shop time. And I should probably clean up the shop if other humans are going to see it. Now get to cleaning, robot!
