ReneeS
It's time to refinish my oak countertop. When it was installed, I applied Behlen Salad Bowl Finish to it, which has held up well in most areas, but the grain is starting to pop in a few places from standing moisture (hard to convince the kids to not leave wet tea towels on the counter top!) and steam (dishwasher). My question is, do I need to completely sand down the whole counter top to the bare wood before I refinish it? Or can I just sand out the damaged bits and recoat it? Also, I still have a ton of the BSB Finish from when I originally did the counter top. I'm sure it's pretty chunky by now. Should I just start with a brand new can? Or if I stirred it really well would the old one still work? Thanks in advance for your suggestions!!
wdwerker
Strain the old stuff and try it on a scrap first, see if it dries well or stays sticky even after a few days. If it doesn't dry hard toss it out. Spot sand and feather out the edges, then spot finish with a coat or 2, after that you can lightly sand everything and re-coat the entire top.
