Chestnut
So Menards ( a local store) is having a sale on wipe on poly where it's 8$ a quart. My question is does any one have experience how long it lasts when it's originally sealed? I was going to stock up on a few quarts beings that it's like $4 off or something. woodbutcher74
I have used MinWax wipe on for years and have had good luck. Holds up well. I don't know if I'd buy a ton ahead, a quart goes along way. Unless you have a ton of finishing to do. I have tried Arm-R-Seal and really like the results but it's not locally available. rodger.
minwax wipe on is one of my "go-to" finishes. i usually buy 3 quarts when it goes on sale. a sale here is about 14 dollars, so 8 dollars is a good buy.
estesbubba
Most oil-based varnishes have a long shelf life if kept unopened and I've used 3 year old Waterlox with no problems. Generally if it hasn't started to gel it's good. When I buy varnish I pour it into a mason jar. Every time I open it I use a propane torch and put a couple seconds in before putting the lid on. When applying pour some in a container and toss any left over - don't put it back in the container because it has been exposed to oxygen and isn't worth the risk to gel your quart just to save a few ounces.
