samhell
So did you ever play Battlefield:1942? I just happen to have done a little mod called Battlefield:Pirates Of course! We also played with various mods that came out. Its engine is very dated these days though.
Lawrence Brown
Yeah, there aren't too many servers for '42 left anymore. I still think it was the best in their series gameplay-wise. Interestingly, the last time I looked there were still 2 or 3 Pirates servers left, but of course no on was playing it. It's kind of weird joining a map and walking around all alone. Still, In it's day I had around half a million downloads and it ultimately got me a job with EA. Oh, if I had a penny for each of those downloads... I'd have nothing but festools in the shop! CubsFan
The only game I play these days is Call of Duty Modern War 2 on the 360. And that takes up plenty of time for me I've managed to avoid StarCraft 2 for now, which is good because I lost a large amount of time in the original. Now I have to see if I can also avoid Civ 5... Lawrence Brown
Thanks for the post. I didn't know they were working on that. Been awhile since I've been involved with Dice or EA. Hmm, it's hard to tell from one video, but maybe they learned some lessons from the first viet nam version. The thing their engine did better than anyone else was vehicular combat, so what do they do? They come out with a sequel set in the jungle! Not exactly their brightest move. Oh well. It looks like they are at least opening up the maps a bit. Still, according to the military channel, evidently the north used tanks in exactly one battle. Not exactly a lot of material to use there. Either way, I'm still going to probably have to run out and get it when it comes out Now when they come out with BC Atlantic Sea Combat, that's when I'll be a happy camper
samhell
yeah, civ 5 is going to be the killer for me Hah the Civilization series I could never figure out. I tried 100 times and my guys are always running around in grass skirts picking berries or whatever when a spaceship or something comes and blows me away. The reactive/destructive environment in the BC games just rules. Watching some chump go running into a building because you are shooting at him and then you just pop a 40mm at him to blow open the wall and you blast him. Very difficult to hide. I love it. Ben H
I must be one of the only console gamer here.... Reach was good. I'm more of a Fallout guy....
samhell
I must be one of the only console gamer here.... Reach was good. I'm more of a Fallout guy.... I play consoles but only action, racing, RPG, or fighting type games. Games where the sticks and buttons make sense. First person shooters on a console are just terrible. The graphics are ok, but not as nice as a decent gaming PC. The main reason I don't play FPS on consoles is because the controls suck. Once you're used to the speed and precision of a keyboard and gaming mouse going to those little thumb sticks is a huge step down. Supposedly Microsoft was going to link the consoles and the PCs online so they could play each other but the PC players consistently crushed the console guys during testing. I don't play consoles online other than racing games with my friends. I can't stand all the screechy voiced little kids calling every thing "gay" and trying to sound tough with a steady stream of profanity. Lawrence Brown
Exactly! My rule is, if the game requires you to point (ie: aim), it doesn't get played on a console. I was working in the games group at Microsoft at the time they bought Halo and told them to turn it into a console game. I got to see everything they had to do to make it possible for someone playing a console to hit anything. It was a very sad time. Incidentally, a few years later they finally released Halo for the PC. It was just a direct port of the console game, so if you play it side-by-side with the console version, you get a first-hand, very painful example of the differences a mouse can make. Good thing this is in the Off-Topic section. This thread has taken so many twists that I barely remember what it was originally about! MikeMc
I gave up my Atari back in 85 for a PC and never looked back. Played UO for about 8 years, eve online, star wars galaxies, WOW, etc... Havent played an online game in over a year. Sometimes I poke around with single player and recently have been playing total war.
