chazmonro
I'm new to the forum, but a long time fan of woodtalk and The WoodWhisperer. Awhile back I read somewhere that the material paper bags are made from was originally developed for polishing plastic windshields for airplanes during WW2, so recently I was working on a project, and instead of using 400 grit or higher sandpaper between coats of finish, I grabbed a piece of paper bag. It was a smaller project and I was using satin wipe on poly, but it seemed to work out pretty good, smooth as a baby’s butt. I’m a bit of an amateur woodworker, so you guys might know why this is or isn’t a good idea, but it seemed to work for me, so I thought I’d pass it along. Has anyone ever used paper bag material in finishing projects?
dtrust
Oh yea, old trick. Amazing how well it works, isn't it. Just a hint, if you have a very light color finish, use white paper bags. A friend told me about this years ago, and since then I've always used lunch bags as the final finish on anything. I'm not sure how well it works on gloss finishes, since I never do really high gloss finishes.
bywc
Yeah I use it for a high grit paper also, Another good use for brown bags is gaping electronic ignitions when you replace them works like a charm everytime.
Clay Baldwin
I had a friend who did a final sand on stained woodwork with pieces of cardboard box. It came slicker then a whistle.
RenaissanceWW
If I apply a wax finish I find paper bags to be excellent for buffing out the wax. Great tip

As often as I've used this trick, I never thought about it for buffing out wax. Got to give that a try. Thanks.
chazmonro
Awesome, I am so happy about this, I knew I had read about this somewhere, probably on the penturners forum a while back, I just didn't think about using it on other woodworking projects until now. I love stuff like this.
