Greg Mascherino
I have found an old Rockwell table saw jointer combo for sale in my neighborhood and am wondering if it is a good buy or not. I currently have a Ridgid R4512 table saw but don't have a jointer yet. Does anyone know anything about this and if it is a decent tool for the price? The seller is asking $250 for it. It has upgraded belts and a fairly new roller stand. I have seen posts saying these were built between the 50s & 70s. Attached are some images of the saw/jointer. Chet
If the above photo is the saw that you have and it is in good shape I would stick with that and just put your money toward a good jointer. The Jointer on this machine doesn't look like much more then a bench top model as far as size and capacity. Also I see a few short comings to the setup you are looking at. Because of the location of the jointer you don't have much support on the left side of the saw table. The extension wing on the right side can be a real finger biter if you get a finger just below the bottom edge for the fence when moving the fence from side to side. And I think you would probably want a fence up grade. How much money and time would you put in to this plus the cost of the original purchase ($250 seems high) before you exceed what it would have cost to just by a good jointer and up grade the table saw at a latter date. drzaius
That short jointer won't be good for much more than short boards. And there is the almost non-existent table to the left of the blade. I bet for that $250, or a little more, you could get a much better jointer & keep your Ridgid, which is a much better table saw. Greg Mascherino
Thanks for the replies. I was really on the fence with this purchase as I don't need the saw. I just need a jointer and this is about the same price as an entry level jointer so I thought it might get me by. I have decided to pass and just save for a better jointer later. Again, thanks for the opinions!
drzaius
When you get a jointer later, you'll probably want to stay away from the benchtop models. They are just too short unless you're only ever jointing real short stock.
