Pondhockey
I heard from a friend about an NPR story about a chop saw with automatic stopping capability. Sounded a lot like Sawtop to me; I'm guessing the two stories are the same and the new saw is, indeed, a contractor's chop/miter saw. Marmotjr
2 hours ago, Minnesota Steve said: I think if Sawstop does come out with a little table saw for $400, it'd be best for everyone in the industry if other makers licensed the tech. But will they? If I remember reading somewhere, the patent is about to expire on the SS tech relatively soon (couple years?), it would allow other companies to reverse engineer their own system. But then there's the development costs of making your own from scratch. If SS sets a price point for their systems (not just the IP) just below the R&D costs for a new system, they would be able to license more systems instead of allowing competitors to make their own. Even then saw companies will still offer saws without a SS, as the price point would still be too high for a lot of consumers.
wdwerker
I bet they have a series of patents covering each improvement no matter how small. I hope the system Bosch came up with is unrelated to their improvements.
