Mark J
My wife and I are sharing a lathe. If one bowl is half done and I remove it from the chuck to work on the second bowl am I going to be able to remount the first bowl in the chuck at some later time and get it centered exactly? Or will it be a tiny bit eccentric?
Tom King
It will be fine. Theorists might argue that it will be a "tiny bit" off, which it might be if checked by a highly accurate micrometer, but this woodworking, not theoretical Physics, and it will be plenty close enough.
ChrisG-Canada
If you're concerned about it, make a mark on the bowl that lines up with a mark on the chuck (I will sometimes mark the edges of jaw #1 onto the bowl) to serves as a registration mark.
thatCharlieDude
What Tom and Chris said! When you remount it if it's a little off you can re-true it again by work it's face. I keep a silver and a black sharpie in my shop for marking jaw 1 on my blanks make it much easier to remount. Also if you're going to turn a tenon on both ends, maybe making a box, turn both of them at the same time before you remove the piece that way it will make it easier to line up the box and a lid later.
thatCharlieDude
Something on the maintenance side I just thought of. If you find your blanks are really off when you remount them check you chuck jaws, they can loosen over time. Recentering and tightening the jaws can help prevent the extra wobbling.
Marmotjr
If you can, mark the bowl to the jaws of the chuck. If the outside of the bowl isn't finished, put light pencil marks on the edges of the #1 Jaw (or anyone you choose, but make sure you indicate which jaw it is, you might have to remove the bowl to see which jaw it is). Then when you remount the bowl, you can line it back up almost exactly where you had it.
