Yes, that looks like pine with a walnut stain.  Pine is an inexpensive way to build it but will dent and damage easily because it is a soft wood.  But if you can find some that is decent looking, straight and not warped or twisted, and if this is a first project it can be a good way to build some skills with out making a big monetary investment.  If you can't find any that is nice and straight it can be frustrating to work with.

You didn't mention your experience level, so please don't take offense.   That looks like a great project for learning.  If you want to challenge youself further you can enhance the joints by using mortise and tenon joints or dados for the shelves.  Have fun. I like it.
