Weird formation in the end of a log

Can someone explain to what happened to this log?

Those have grain running opposite. I wonder if that got spiked and plugged then the center rotted out but the plugs didn’t. Are spile taps tapered?

Interesting point. I hadn't considered that. I just saw it on a walk in my local park. No one around to ask!
